Ivy Lane School

PSHE

At Ivy Lane we have chosen to use ‘Jigsaw PSHE’ to support the delivery of our PSHE lessons and ensure that all teachers are tackling age appropriate issues.

‘Jigsaw PSHE’ develops children’s emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development as well as offering opportunities to share and discuss current issues that the children are dealing with.

We believe that ‘Jigsaw PSHE’ helps us to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this constantly changing world.

‘Jigsaw PSHE’ encompasses 6 main units:

1. Being my world

Includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising Learning Charters.

2. CELEBRATING DIFFERENCE

Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and diversity work.

3. DREAMS AND GOALS

Includes goal-setting, aspirations for yourself and the world and working together.

4. HEALTHY ME

Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices.

5. RELATIONSHIPS

Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, and conflict resolution and communication skills.

6. CHANGING ME

This puzzle includes sex and relationships education in the context of coping positively with change (includes age-appropriate sex education).

Each year group covers all of these units in discrete PSHE lessons throughout the year. We have found that the progression of learning within ‘Jigsaw PSHE’ ensures the children are accessing information which is relevant, timely and appropriate and has meant that their confidence has grown significantly. The lessons are designed to engage the whole class in open discussions and activities that promote a mindful response as well as respect and tolerance for others.
